Quantum Hackathon – SESAME 2026
The Quantum Computing Hackathon – SESAME 2026 is a hands-on event focused on using quantum computing to address real-world problems related to water and energy. It will bring together students and young researchers from across the Middle East and beyond, supported by international mentors, speakers, judges.
During the hackathon, participants will work in teams on practical computing challenges related to water and energy and explore how quantum computing approaches could help address them. The aim is to give participants practical experience, encourage collaboration, and connect quantum computing with real problems that are relevant to the region.
The hackathon is also aligned with relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to clean water and sanitation and affordable and clean energy.
A practical and impact-driven approach
Unlike traditional academic events that emphasize lectures or purely theoretical discussions, the Quantum Hackathon places hands-on experimentation and teamwork at the core of the experience. Participants will work in multidisciplinary teams, guided by experts from academia, research institutions, and industry worldwide, to develop proofs of concept, algorithms, or prototype solutions using modern quantum computing tools and platforms.
The proposed challenges are inspired by ongoing development projects and regional priorities in Jordan & Middle East, highlighting the potential benefits of quantum computing for addressing large-scale societal and technological challenges.
Strengthening Middle east’s quantum ecosystem through global collaboration
Organized by SESAME in collaboration with CERN, Delegation of the European Union to Jordan (EEAS), Open Quantum Institute (OQI) and Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) through its Hackathon in a box program, this hackathon is embedded within a broader ecosystem-building dynamic.
By combining regional talent with international expertise, the event aims to:
- build and strengthen quantum computing capacity across Middle East and beyond,
- Foster collaboration between international institutions and global experts,
- Encourage knowledge transfer and mentorship at an international level,
- Raise awareness among stakeholders and decision-makers about the strategic importance of quantum technologies for the continent.
Who is the hackathon for?
The Quantum Impact Hackathon – 2026 is intended for:
- Master’s and PhD students from universities,
- Highly motivated final-year Bachelor (BSc / Licence L3) students,
- Young researchers and professionals in transition,
Participants will be primarily selected based on their qualifications, as well as through nominations from participating facilities (in some cases), to ensure academic quality, diversity, and meaningful engagement.
Event language
As SESAME is an international research centre, mentors, speakers, and judges will come from different countries and nationalities. Therefore, English will be the official language of the event.
