Quantum Hackathon – SESAME 2026

The Quantum Hackathon – SESAME 2026 is a regional, hands-on event dedicated to the application of quantum computing technologies to real-world challenges of high societal relevance. It aims to bring together students and young researchers from across Middle East, and connect them with international mentors, speakers, and jury members to collaboratively explore how quantum computing can contribute to sustainable development.

The hackathon focuses on practical problem-solving, encouraging participants to move beyond theoretical concepts and work on concrete use cases related to health, clean energy, and climate action, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A practical and impact-driven approach

Unlike traditional academic events that emphasize lectures or purely theoretical discussions, the Quantum Hackathon places hands-on experimentation and teamwork at the core of the experience. Participants will work in multidisciplinary teams, guided by experts from academia, research institutions, and industry worldwide, to develop proofs of concept, algorithms, or prototype solutions using modern quantum computing tools and platforms.

The proposed challenges are inspired by ongoing development projects and regional priorities in Morocco and across Africa, highlighting the potential benefits of quantum computing for addressing large-scale societal and technological challenges.

Strengthening Middle east’s quantum ecosystem through global collaboration

Organized by SESAME in collaboration with CERN and the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) through its Hackathon in a box program, this hackathon is embedded within a broader ecosystem-building dynamic.

By combining regional talent with international expertise, the event aims to:

  • build and strengthen quantum computing capacity across Middle east,
  • foster collaboration between international institutions and global experts,
  • encourage knowledge transfer and mentorship at an international level,
  • raise awareness among stakeholders and decision-makers about the strategic importance of quantum technologies for the continent.

Who is the hackathon for?

The Quantum Impact Hackathon – 2026 is intended for:

  • Master’s and PhD students from universities,
  • Highly motivated final-year Bachelor (BSc / Licence L3) students,
  • Young researchers and professionals in transition,
  • Engineering students

Participants will be primarily selected through faculty nominations to ensure academic quality, diversity, and meaningful engagement.

Mentors, invited speakers, and jury members will be drawn from a global pool of experts, ensuring high-level scientific guidance and international visibility for participants.
